Chapter 18
I didnât sleep at Sébastienâs that night. Instead, he offers to drive me to Gabyâs and together we zoom through the city on his bike. Gaby couldnât be happier to have me back in her arms, and Iâm grateful for her, too. She pulls me into her one-room flat and points to the bed.
âAs you can see, Marie is here, but make yourself at home. She kept me sane while you went radio silent.â
Marie is kneeling on the bed, looking out the window. âHeâs got a motorbike! Thatâs pretty cool.â
âItâs bad for the environment,â Gaby says, pushing me relentlessly towards the bed.
The truth is, Iâm a bit overwhelmed. Was Marie there when I called Gaby? Did Gaby tell her everything?
Marie smiles and pats the bed. âGet in. Iâll do your nails.â
I see a whole collection of paints on the bedside table. I slowly get into bed and look at my nails, noticing I havenât taken much care of them lately. âDo you think you can save them?â
âTheyâre not that bad. Nothing a little colour wonât fix. Do you have a preference?â
Meanwhile, Gaby throws a pizza box on the bed. âThereâs still two slices in there. But we can order more if youâre hungry.â
Being with these two is like a cup of hot cocoa. Within minutes, I feel the last stubborn hooks of anxiety dissolve. Iâm fed, pampered, and accepted. Even though Iâve turned up so late and obviously interrupted their date, theyâre there for me. âIs it too daring to wear black?â
Gaby clearly thinks so, but Marie smiles warmly. âLike Gaspar? Did you know I did his nails? That guy was hopeless with a brush.â She picks up a black bottle and I canât help but wonder if itâs the same one he used.
âI miss him so much.â
âI know, honey.â Gaby wraps her arms around me and buries her chin in my shoulder. âIâm so sorry.â
Marie takes my left hand and puts it on a small purple pillow. âWill Sébastien mind if you wear Gasparâs colour? Not that black is a colour, but heâd argue it is.â
I share a look with Gaby, who gives me a subtle shrug. Immediately, I know she hasnât betrayed me. Even though sheâs freaked out, she didnât give away my secret. Sheâs just the best.
With a sigh, I decide itâs high time I returned the favour. If she trusts Marie, so should I. I just need to remind her to stay out of this. âHe wonât mind. This thing between us⦠itâs just an act.â
âAlix,â Gaby whispers in surprise. âAre you sure?â
Curious, Marie looks at me. âWhy would you pretend to be with Sébastien?â
âTo fool his father, his stupid cousin, and my sister.â Probably a whole lot of other people, too, but I donât want to think about it. âThe thing is⦠Petite Alix got away.â
For a moment Marie is just confused. Then her eyes widen, and she gasps. âYou can still see ghosts.â
I nod. âI can, but I canât see Gaspar. He disappeared the day after I was captured.
